Malachi 3

Verse of the Day: V16 “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.”

1.  Refiner (V1-7)

V2 “But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:”

Prophet Malachi prophesied the coming of the Lord and warned the people of Israel to get ready to meet God. The Lord shall come as a Refiner and Purifier of silver, and He shall judge all the people in the world whether they are righteous or wicked before Him.

V3 “And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.”

2.  Rob (V8-15)

V8 “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.”

The people denied that they had robbed God when He challenged them to give their tithes and offerings to Him. God then challenged them to prove Him. God promised them that He shall pour abundant blessings upon their lives and that they would be laying treasures in heaven, if they would give their tithes and offerings to Him. However they never thought of giving to God, as they only thought of laying treasures on earth for themselves.

V10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

3.  Remembrance (V16-18)

V16 “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.”

God has a book of remembrance where He kept His people’s names and their services done for Him. Let us fear the Lord, think upon Him and serve Him all the days of our life.

V18 “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.”

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, please remember me and help me to serve You now and forever.

Malachi 2

Verse of the Day:V2 “If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.”

1.  Curse (V1-4)

V1 “And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.”

God through Prophet Malachi pronounced a curse upon the priests who did not give glory to Him for who He is, and what He has done for the people of Israel. At that time many priests doubted and disobeyed God, and many served Him for their own selfish gain. God never bless the hypocrites, but instead will send a curse upon them. Let us escape God’s curse by giving Him all the glory, and trusting and obeying Him with truth and sincerity.

V2 “If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.”

2.  Covenant (V5-13)

V5 “My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.”

The Lord covenanted with all the priests from the tribe of Levi that He shall only grant life and peace to those who fear Him and His name, and trust and obey Him. However the priests not only failed to fear God and His name, and trust and obey Him, but they caused many to stumble at the law, and depart from God who loves and cares for them.

V8 “But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.”

3.  Companion (V14-17)

V14 “Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.”

God reminded the married couples to remain faithful and loving to each other. God’s definition of marriage is not just two individuals accountable to each other, but rather three individuals, with the Lord as their witness. When God joins the man and the woman together, they become lifelong lovers and companions, until death does them apart.

“Wherefore they are no more twain, but one fleah. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:6)

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, please help me to trust and obey You, and escape Your curse.

Malachi 1

Verse of the Day: V2 “I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,”

1.  Polluted (V1-9)

V2 “I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,”

The Almighty God through Prophet Malachi declared to the people of Israel (Jacob) that He truly loved them. However the people of Israel were ungrateful and unthankful, and they only pretended to love God. They offered polluted bread upon His altar assuming that the Lord would accept their offering. They failed to realise and understand that the Lord saw through their pretence and rebellion, and would never accept their polluted bread. It grieved the Lord that the people He truly loved would sin and rebel against Him.

V7 “Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible.”

2.  Pleasure (V10-11)

V10 “Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.”

God had no pleasure in the people of Israel because they were impure and insincere, and pretended to worship Him in order to receive His blessings. However God is not mocked, and He will never accept our worship unless we truly repent of our sins and hypocrisy.

V11 “For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.”

3.  Profaned (V12-14)

V12 “But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.”

The people of Israel profaned and corrupted their worship before the Lord, their great King, and subsequently He severely judged and punished them for their sins and rebellion.

V14 “But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.”

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, please help me to love You with a pure and sincere heart and mind.

Zechariah 14

Verse of the Day: V20 “In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar.”

1.  Waters (V1-11)

V8 “And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.”

In that day, or a future period of time known as the Millennium, the Lord Jesus Christ shall return to earth, and resides in Jerusalem to rule the entire world. During the Millennium, living waters shall flow out from His throne purifying all who worship Him.

“And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 22:1)

2.  Wealth (V12-15)

V12 “And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”

In that day the Lord Jesus shall destroy all nations and people who are against Jerusalem, and establish it as His kingdom and city of great wealth of gold, silver and apparel.

V14 “And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.”

3.  Worship (V16-21)

V16 “And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

Every year during the Millennium everyone from all over the world shall travel to the holy city of Jerusalem to worship the Lord Jesus Christ, the King, and everything such as the bells, the pots, etc., shall be cleansed, sanctified and dedicated for His holy service.

V20 “In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar.”

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, please help me to worship You in the beauty of holiness.

Zechariah 13

Verse of the Day: V9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

1.  Sin (V1)

V1 “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.”

The Lord Jesus Christ, from the city of Jerusalem and the family of David, is the Fountain of living waters, and whosoever believes in Him, and repents of his sins, shall be forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness, and shall never thirst spiritually again.

“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

2.  Shepherd (V2-7)

V7 “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.”

Jesus Christ is the good Shepherd who gave His life for the sheep and was smitten and crucified on the cruel cross, and shed His blood for the sins of mankind and whosoever believes and trusts in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life with Him in heaven.

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

3.  Silver (V8-9)

V9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

The Almighty God told Prophet Zechariah that He shall hear whosoever calls upon His name and believes in Him, and He shall be their God, and they shall be His people. God loves His people very much. He will refine and try His people as they go through the fire of trouble and testing that they will come forth as shining silver and precious gold. The people will then glorify the Lord, and become examples of His love, glory and holiness.

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” (Psalms 50:15)

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, please help me to call upon You, because You are the LORD, my God.

Zechariah 12

Verse of the Day: V9 “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

1.  The Siege (V1-2)

V1 “The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”

God proclaimed to Prophet Zechariah that He is the Creator of everything including Jerusalem, His city, and He shall protect and preserve it for His glory and honour. During the time of Zechariah, and even today, many people and nations have laid siege to Jerusalem, and invade and attack it, yet they can never completely defeat and destroy it.

V2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.”

2.  The Stone (V3-8)

V3 “And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”

God revealed to Zechariah that Jerusalem is like a burdensome stone or heavy rock to all who tries to lift or destroy it. Until today, the Lord has miraculously protected and preserved Jerusalem, and has destroyed all the people and nations that had gone against it.

V9 “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

3.  The Spirit (V10-14)

V10 “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”

God spoke to Zechariah that there shall be a day when He shall pour the spirit of grace and supplications upon Jerusalem, and she shall mourn, repent, look and believe that Christ, whom she pierced and crucified, is truly the Son of God, her Saviour and Husband.

“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Revelation 21:2)

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, thank You that I am for Jerusalem, and You, the God of Jerusalem.

Zechariah 11

Verse of the Day: V7 “And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.”

1.  Beauty (V1-13)

V7 “And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.”

God commanded Prophet Zechariah to take two shepherd’s staves, called Beauty and Bands, and used them to lead the flock of sheep or the people of Israel. God commanded Zechariah to break one of the staves called Beauty, which represented Christ, and this action of breaking the stave was actually a prophecy that Beauty or Christ shall be broken or shall die for the sins of man. This prophecy came to pass when Christ, the Son of God, left the throne of heaven, and came to live, die and shed His blood for the sins of man.

V10 “And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people.”

2.  Bands (V14)

V14 “Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.”

God commanded Zechariah to break another staff called Bands, and this was also another prophecy that Christ, the Bands, shall be broken and rejected by His own people, the people of Judah and Israel. Subsequently, God judged and punished the people of Judah and Israel by scattering them throughout the world. It is sad that even today majority of the people of Judah and Israel still refuse to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

3.  Broken (V15-17)

V16 “For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.”

God through Zechariah warned the people that there are true as well as false shepherds. The true shepherds love and feed their flock, and heal the broken people, while the false shepherds deceive and destroy their flock, and used their people for their own selfish gain.

“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;” (1 Peter 5:2)

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, thank You that I know and believe Christ, the Beauty and the Bands.

Zechariah 9

Verse of the Day: V16 “And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.”

1.  The Pride (V1-8)

V6 “And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.”

The Almighty God through Prophet Zechariah warned the Philistines that He shall destroy their power and pride for all their sins and wickedness, and for invading and destroying His people - the people of Judah. However, God preserved a remnant of the people of Judah, who were faithful to Him, and appointed a governor to rule over them.

V7 “And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he that remaineth, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite.”

2.  The Prisoners (V9-11)

V9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

Zechariah prophesied the first coming of the King, who was none other than Jesus Christ, who shall come to this earth, riding upon an ass, and He shall die on the cruel cross, and shed His precious blood for the sins of mankind. The King did come, and died, and today, anyone who believes in Jesus Christ is no longer a prisoner of his sins, but he shall escape the fiery pits of hell, and shall have everlasting life with Jesus Christ in heaven one day.

V11 “As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.”

3.  The People (V12-17)

V12 “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;”

Zechariah prophesied the second coming of the King in the future, during the Millennium, and this time the King, the Lord Jesus Christ, shall come to reign and rule in the holy city of Jerusalem. In that day, the people shall have the glorious hope in Christ, and they shall be His jewels of crown, and the special signs, that shine brightly for His glory and honour.

V16 “And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.”

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, thank You that You are my God and I am Your people.

Zechariah 10

Verse of the Day:V12 “And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.”

1.  Showers (V1-2)

V1 “Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain, so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.”

Prophet Zechariah reminded the people of Judah that it was God, and not their idols, who gave them showers of rain for their crops and their survival. Though the people kept looking for the Shepherd or God, yet God was always with them. Time and again, God sent His prophets, like Zechariah, to plead with them to repent their sins, and turn to Him and obey Him, so that He can bless them with showers of rain, and all spiritual blessings.

V2 “For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.”

2.  Shepherds (V3-4)

V3 “Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.”

Zechariah warned the people that there were goats or false shepherds as well as true shepherds. The false shepherds will lie, deceive, and ultimately lead the people to the pits of fiery hell, while the good Shepherd and His true shepherds will preach the truth, and give their lives for the people, and eventually lead them to the pearly gates of heaven.

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

3.  Strengthen (V5-12)

V6 “And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.”

Only the good Shepherd and Saviour shall strengthen and save His people, and have great mercy on them, and answer their prayers according to His sovereign and perfect will.

V12 “And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.”

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, thank You that You are my Strength and my Saviour.
